Austin Lamewona

Playwright • Lyricist

Austin Lamewona is a playwright, lyricist, and independent theatre producer in Chicago. His work is often multidisciplinary in style, integrating poetry, lyrics, music, and dialogue to create distinct and honest stories that lend themselves well to the stage.

Lamewona is an experienced writer of many genres, with nine years of writing theatre works and a robust track record of putting together unique independent theatrical productions. His first self-produced project featured his play, A Night with the Dream Keeper, as part of the 2016 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. This show also won Lamewona the 2016 Against the Grain Theater Festival Student Playwriting Competition. Other notable projects include his original musical and the Summer 2019 self-produced touring production of The Octets Ohio Tour, where he displayed his theatrical range as director, lighting designer, and primary producer of an 8-show tour across 5 Ohio cities. Following The Octets Ohio Tour, Lamewona served as co-founder of New Wave, an independent theatre production company that focuses on producing artist-led, cutting-edge new works.

Lamewona grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been a writer for as long as he could write. Starting out with comics panels, he would spend most of his childhood working on manuscripts, with the goal of becoming a novelist. As he progressed through high school, he started singing in choirs and acting in school plays and musicals. Eventually, his passion for writing also found a suitor with theatre, and before the end of high school, he was a published playwright, with his 2015 play Next at offthewallplays.com.

Since 2019, Lamewona has been hard at work developing The Underground, a play with music about a world without music. The show had its initial feedback reading in February 2020 at Miami University, and has since then had multiple developmental readings, including the November 2022 Chicago premiere workshop performance in the Venus Cabaret Theater at Mercury Theater Chicago, and the December 2023 feedback reading at Redtwist Theatre. Since then, The Underground has been workshopped and staged at Greenhouse Theater Center (April 2024) and most recently Trap Door Theatre (June 2024). The show is scheduled for a theatrical production and a live album recording for August 2024 at The Den Theatre in Chicago.

Austin Lamewona attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he studied Marketing and Arts Management, and spent his undergraduate years producing student theatre and singing in the Collegiate Chorale. Since graduating in 2020, Lamewona has resided in Chicago and spends his time writing plays, poetry, and music.
